Looking for an out-of-print art book? Visit the Internet. Browse several sites, since books may be posted on each by different dealers, at widely differing prices. Buying procedures also differ: Bibliofind.com, ABE and Bibliology.com provide the phone numbers and e-mail addresses of booksellers who have your volume in stock, and let you take it from there. Alibris.com doesn't provide dealer contact information, but it completes the transaction for you (for a fee added to the dealer's price). One thing Tipking can't help you do is find rare books - but BookFinder.com (http://www.bookfinder.com) can. This is a site I first discovered 12 months ago or more and found to be a bit limited, but since then it has developed a great deal. It has now become probably the most useful site on the web for finding rare and out-of-print books and performed particularly well when I tested it by looking for some old favourites from my schooldays. You use it just as if you were searching on a regular retail site like Amazon. The list of matches, with prices, is linked to individual booksellers. Most are in the US, but there are now plenty of UK ones as well and it is then a simple matter to e-mail the seller directly for more details of how to buy the book. If it's a shop offering online sales, you'll be able to order it there and then.

All right folks, take out a pen and paper or your Palm Pilot or something and follow along as we browse. First of all the first place to go of course as Lance would tell us and certainly his bosses would confirm that, is PC Magazine's site -- PCMag.com where you'll find this list of a hundred sites -- actually two hundred -- a hundred obscure, a hundred not so obscure. Then you can go into these various places, for example, www.BookFinder.com. So you could get used books on Amazon, but this is a little more obscure. I believe what it does is it links bookstores all across the country which is kind of cool because it keeps independent bookstores going. I plugged in one of my favorite books, I'm a space guy -- Valentine Lebedev -- Diary of a Cosmonaut, very obscure title and I found it in six places around the country. Pretty cool?
